Windows 10 End of Support

Overview:

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach its end of support on October 14, 2025. After this date, users will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft. Consequently, as the deadline approaches, it is essential for individuals and organizations to plan their transition to a newer operating system, such as Windows 11, to ensure continued security and functionality. Staying ahead of this change will help avoid vulnerabilities and maintain a smooth, secure computing experience.

Despite the introduction and gradual adoption of Windows 11, many users and organizations continue to rely on Windows 10 for their computing needs. Therefore, it's imperative to prepare for this transition to avoid disruptions in service and maintain optimal security.

Windows 10 End of Support

As of mid-2024, Windows 10 remains the most widely used desktop operating system, holding approximately 68% of the market share among Windows operating systems. This dominance translates to roughly 1 billion monthly active devices still running Windows 10 globally. Although Windows 11 has been introduced and is gradually being adopted, many users and organizations continue to rely on Windows 10 for their computing needs.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, signifies a critical transition period for users and organizations still relying on this widely used operating system. With approximately 1 billion devices running Windows 10 as of mid-2024, the shift to newer platforms like Windows 11 is crucial to maintaining security and functionality. As the deadline approaches, proactive planning and upgrading will be essential to avoid potential vulnerabilities and ensure a seamless computing experience moving forward.

What does a upgrade mean?

Around 2018, we assisted Volkswagen Group, based in Milton Keynes, and the Volkswagen Group National Learning Centre in Wymbush with their upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. This upgrade also involved refreshing laptops, which required the Project Team to meticulously plan a comprehensive project encompassing every brand and department under Volkswagen Group.

Project planning involves considering various factors, such as:

  • Technical
  • Resource
  • Budget
  • Risk
  • Control
  • Goal

The list of considerations is extensive. A project is only as good as its plan, and to keep it on course, it is essential to have the right team in place to deliver.

Niraj was really helpful and he even smiled when dealing with my enquiry.
I came into the department with laptop that was beyond repair at 1pm and walked out with a new, fully functioning laptop at 3pm - brilliant service.
Thank you very much

Planning:

Here are some key takeaways from our previous rollout, particularly from a technical standpoint. It's essential to maintain a clear plan on how we achieve our goals as individuals, teams, and departments alike.

  • Assets; Desktop, Laptops
  • Asset Management, CMDB Records, Asset Tags.
  • Secure Storage
  • Build Image
  • Multiple Build Stations
  • Branding
  • Applications or Software
  • Drivers
  • Data
  • Configuration
  • Technical Support

Plan In Action:

Our experience highlights that teamwork, enthusiasm, and exceeding expectations are crucial. However, leaders must also recognize and equally prioritize rewarding team efforts. Organizations often overlook that their key assets are their employees. If employees feel unappreciated, they are likely to leave as quickly as they arrived.

Let's explore how this appeared in 2018!

The team needs to be prepared to receive asset deliveries, which often arrive in batches rather than all at once, and can include more than just a few desktops or laptops.

After receiving the assets, they must be transported to a secure location.

The next step involves updating the CMDB Database. Initially, this typically involves adding the asset to the database with its model number and serial number.

Assets are then transported as needed from the secure location.

Upon receipt, the process involves unboxing, asset tagging, and another update to the CMDB, this time adding the asset number to the database.

Deploying custom build image.

Subsequently, deploying applications, software, and branding.

Additionally, installing drivers where necessary ensures compatibility.

Transitioning data remains essential, especially for organizations still reliant on local storage.

Setting up configurations for users, such as VPN clients.

Once completed, the handover process includes updating the CMDB to assign the user to the asset.

Finally, providing ongoing technical support addresses challenges encountered post-handover.

Project Resources?

By now, you should recognize that behind every project lie numerous tedious tasks—tasks that employees often resist delivering or, when they must, their execution tends to be suboptimal.

When discussing projects, size is a critical factor. Many organizations opt to hire temporary staff, commonly referred to as contractors or freelancers, specifically for project-based deliverables.

The contracting landscape has evolved significantly since 2018. However, for any deployment program, contractors and freelancers typically command daily rates ranging from £230 to £300. While some companies attempt to negotiate lower rates successfully, the high turnover of professionals can undermine team stability. To maintain a successful team, offering competitive market rates is essential.

Furthermore, many organizations fail to account for the time required to train new resources. Losing a valuable team member is an irreversibly expensive setback for any organization.

Lessons Learnt:

In general, the process was effective, leading to the overall success of the project. While there were many areas for improvement, that discussion can wait for another occasion. Essentially, our experience participating in the project was positive. We appreciated the opportunity to learn, yet we also recognized its shortcomings and how we could contribute to better planning and delivering Windows 11 in the future.
